Kyoko Comes To Cascavel

It’s early Wednesday morning. Kyoko is already leaving for Buenos Aires to meet with her girl-friend. Together they’ll be traveling around other parts of South America in the next days/weeks. Thank you for coming, Kyoko (even though it was just for a day). It was wonderful having you around. May God bless and protect you always. We love you!!

Xmas! + Iguazu Falls + Argentina

I met Kyoko for the first time in Sydney, Australia. One year later she writes me saying she’s up for a visit and would like to see the Iguazu Falls. As a dream come true, here we are on the 25th of December (Sat.) visiting the Iguazu Falls TO•GETH•ER!!!

Because of visa complications, Kyoko could not stay the night in Brazilian territory. So in the late evening, we crossed the border over to Argentina back to the hostel where she was staying. Although we both had a long day and were really tired, Kyoko still found energy to make us supper. She made pasta. It was sooo delicious! On Sunday morning we took a stroll in the downtown of Puerto Iguazu.

Now it was 2:30 P.M. and time to disperse. I took the bus back to Cascavel and Kyoko walked back to the hostel. She said she’ll come visit me and my folks on Tuesday at my house. I hope she succeeds in getting a proper visa. It’ll be exciting to see her again.

For example, from our general knowledge of English, can we confidently answer questions like these: ” Are we more likely to say He isn’t old or He’s not old?” Or ”Which is more frequent: grandfather or grandpa?” Or “How do people end a conversation?” We probably can’t answer all these questions from our intuition. However, when we look at hundreds of real conversations in a database, or corpus, we can find out the answers to these and many other questions about grammar, vocabulary, and conversation. But how can we use this fascinating information in a course for learners and make it interesting, enjoyable and motivating in the classroom?” — Luiz Dentelo

A few days ago I was invited to a workshop where Luiz Dentelo (teacher trainer from Cambridge University Press) was speaking. The title of the workshop was “Motivating Teens and Tweens”. I thought it was very worthwhile, and I learned some things that I never thought of before. Luiz spoke of the use of imagination, creativity, variety, fun and student interaction. He said all of these elements are fundamental, part of maintaining a student’s interest in learning high. Throughout the presentation/lecture Luiz made a number of side comments where he spoke himself being fond of Kieran Egan, an acknowledged educator and writer who wrote tons of books on education. I Googled his name and found him to be quite an interesting person. To my luck, I also found a couple of videos on YouTube and a few websites with a lot of content about these two educators. I think I can use all of that information as study tools. As you can tell, I’m VERY much into education these days, and I can’t wait to get some teaching experience^^

God made all the basic necessities of life pleasurable—breathing, eating, sleeping, exercising, and loving. The Bible says that He created all things for His pleasure (Revelation 4:11 KJV), but He also created them for ours. God made life to be enjoyable, and He equipped us to enjoy it. He created our senses and the nerves that register pleasure. He gave us the gift of sight so we could look upon things that are pleasing to the eye, taste to be able to enjoy delicious food, hearing so we could listen to the beautiful sounds of nature and beautiful music, touch so we could feel pleasurable sensations, and smell so we could enjoy the lovely fragrance of a flower.

God created pleasure for our good, but some people have been taught that pleasure is sinful, that it’s wrong to enjoy certain things that bring pleasure. According to the Bible, that’s simply not so! Pleasure only becomes ungodly when it’s not as God created it or intended for it to be used—when it’s perverted, overindulged in, or put before Him and what He wants for us.

The rule of thumb is simple: Put God first in everything you do, and then you can enjoy all His goodness in full faith. All this and Heaven too!
